Description from Lineside Video Productions
Run-time 1 hour and 40 mins approx.
In this programme we visit a number of busy railway locations, the first around Cheltenham on the mainline between Birmingham and South Wales and Bristol during 1991; the second is a trip to Crewe in 1985, 1987 and 1988, our third location is to Whiteball Bank in Somerset in 1988 and 1989 and finally to South Milford near Knottingley throughout the years from 1986 to 1991.
We begin at Cheltenham where the busy northeast-southwest cross-country route is witnessed on a number of occasions during the Summer. Amongst the trains on view are class 37s on steel, chemical tanks and departmental workings; a class 31 towing a class 25, a class 90 and a class 86 to Laira Open Day; class 47s on parcels, cross-country passenger (including on rakes of Mark III coaching stock), the Swindon to Longbridge car components train as well as China-clay freight trains to Cornwall. We see a variety of DMUs including the GWR-liveried class 117 set, as well as class 156 and class 101. We see class 56s on MGR workings and a class 60 on Steel.
Crewe is our next calling point as we look at everyday traction in the late 1980s. We have class 20s, 47s, 86s, 87s and class 90s and even a Class 128 Diesel Parcels Unit. Scenes are taken at the north and south ends of the station as well as at the southern end of Basford Hall Yard.
Our third location takes us to the 1 in 80 Whiteball Bank on the ex-GW mainline to Exeter. Class 47s, 50s and 31s are seen on passenger as well as class 37s on freight, including 37 885 on a lenghty Leith to Newton Abbot pipe train.
Our final location is the busy railway hot-spot that is South Milford. A whole host of traffic is seen including; class 56s on MGR coal traffic, class 47s on coal, chemicals, oil and Freightliner, Class 31s on departmental, empty coaching stock, aggregates, oil and chemicals; class 20s on departmental duties and class 37s on steel and mixed freight duties. Highlights include class 56s struggling on the heavy coal workings to and from the nearby power stations and a Cravens DMU.
